First thing to do would be to get a service manual (pricey, about $300+ or CD option) and do the pressure checks on the transmission to determine source of problem. Have you checked the obvious like oil levels and filter condition, leaks, etc?
Sounds to me like the dealer didn't want the job, its probably more like OM says, a sludged up scavenge screen or something.
I haven't bought the machine yet was just wondering if anyone had heard of anything lime this before, I did read some other discussions on Trans problem solving on these but never found the conclusion of what they found. Yes if I buy it is will get a service Manuel for it, I have a cousin that is a service tech for cat I wonder if he can transfer me it off his laptop? I will have to ask him
No, can't say that I've ever heard of the "cracked valve" diagnosis but anything is possible.
As previously mentioned, I would check the transmission filter screen. If it's plugged it will effect performance. Also whats plugging up the screen may lead you to the problem.
I had a D3 that was sluggish until we cleaned the screen.
Good luck.
my 1987 D3B---27y--has filter also for the transmission---first time i changed it i cut it open and found a bit of debris in the folds---too bad my service manual is 200 miles from me right now

If the screen collapses due to debris, or sludge created by condensation, the screen will collapse and further restrict oil supply. I saw this a couple of times back in the '70's.
Ok thanks guys, actually just going to look at the machine now. If I can get it bought I will tear into it.
