what is the best way to tell what type or series of d342 engine one has without a tag or stamp. Is there any distinctive parts or markings on the engine other than the tags. Reason for the question is because I may need head gaskets and I don't want to tear the engine apart without knowing if i can get them.

If the engine is in a machine, D8, start with the s/n of the machine. The s/n is located at the rear of the bevel gear case, on the upper left hand side. If there is a winch or ripper on it , the number will be covered up. You could also pull the valve covers and use the casting numbers. You won't have trouble getting your gaskets, I just ordered and recieved head gaskets for my 3T, genuine Cat, from the Cat Dealer in Northern Alberta Canada.

The only thing you have to identify is if it is a 'spacer plate' engine to make sure you get the spacer plate gaskets as well, the head gaskets all change up to the same number for a D8H and D8K. The only other changes are the turbo and manifold gaskets.
If my memory serves me correctly and you work backwards, the current head gasket supplied to fit a three cylinder D6 and 1H/8R/2U D8 is the same as that now supplied to fit the last D342 in a D8K.
