Hello
I have a D3400 gen set I would like to use but pony crank in bad shape. Considering using a Honda in it's place, but wondering approximate HP of the pony? I know it's not a bolt on. I have a pretty well equipped machine shop so I can build what's needed.
Thanks

I believe the pony for a 311/315 is about 9 HP if that helps. Sandman has several pony’s for sale still?
Hope you get it running. JM

Don't forget the speed difference. Honda is 3600 rpm, and the Cat pony is probably not more than 1800. 9hp sounds adequate to me, once you gear it down.

Seems to me d318 pony runs over 3000rpm, but I might be mistaken

I couldn't find a spec for the inlines, but I did find that a D2 pony runs at 3,250 "high idle". So maybe you're right. I don't think my D7 pony is anywhere near that speed, but that doesn't mean it's right.

This is an opposed pony, similar to the one I rebuilt for my 8T grader 318. It was a few years ago but 3250 sounds about right. I thought it was way too fast at the time but it won’t start the diesel very well at slower speeds. Both engines rebuilt at the same time. I’m thinking this pony is smaller but so is the main.

Hi Team,
the D315 horizontal pony is rated at 10hp @ 3000rpm full load--this from a D315 Engine yellow Servicemen's Reference Book.
The Diesel Engine cranking speed for a D315 with Standard pony setup is 278 RPM for correct easy starting in cold conditions to occur.
This is the Diesel engine cranking speed you need--also be aware that the pony exhaust is piped thru a heating tube within the inlet manifold to assist cold starting, also the heat from the pony engine water jacket is circulated thru the Diesel cooling system to help pre-condition and warm the Diesel, also for cold starting assistance--you will not have these aids with the Honda--can pipe its exhaust thru no doubt with a bit of work.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Eddie B.

It does help. Thanks.
I was thinking of plumbing the exhaust thru the intake tube as the original was. Probably find a way to put a block heater on too.

New GX390 is going to run $900 or so depending if you get battery charging and how fast you want it. 11.2 maximum horsepower 9.4 continuous rating @3600.

The knockoffs from Harbor freight will be close to 1/3 that cost. Cousin of mine went through two on a little UTV before giving up and buying another Honda.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I'd probably end up using an old 14hp Kohler, not the Honda I originally said. Looking at around $1000 to repair pony crank plus probably $1000-1500 in other parts. I may still do it. Just kicking ideas around. Haven't even remembered to look for a starter hole on main yet.
