Hi I have a D333c in my boat, serial no. 66d01651.   The rear crank seal is leaking and I intend to replace it.  Cat SIS shows the part to be 9H-1129 which I have ordered and received from Caterpillar here in Sydney Australia.  The seal does not include an inner wear sleeve so I rang Caterpillar to double check but essentially they are just looking at the same computer page as me and couldnt offer any help.

I can see various aftermarket seals and they all have the inner wear sleeve included in the seal.

Can anyone help me as to whether there should be an inner wear sleeve or was this era of engines without?

Thanks Ian

Hello Ian
An ebay search for 9H1129 shows many results none with a wear ring. The parts lookup in SIS for your engine shows no wear ring but the D333C manual in the library shows a different seal and a wear ring but the serial number range is very different.
Not much help but usually if the manual does not show one then there is none installed.

My Parts Book for 66D1 to 8890 does not show a sleeve being used. Seal only.

Thanks for the quick replies. What got me started on this was the service manual which has a whole page on wear sleeve removal.

My first question would be does the crankshaft need a sleeve?
Early crankshafts w/o sleeve are part #5S5871. Are later crankshafts with sleeve the same part number?
Other than checking whether the crankshaft hubs are the same with or w/o sleeve I see no reason not to use a sleeve if you need one.

Thanks Old Magnet,

I will take your advice and worry about the sleeve after I have assessed the condition of the crank. It seems Caterpiller sell a "blue" crank seal which comes with a sleeve if I need it.

it may well be a repair thing. if your crank is worn do this and the you use that method to restore normal operation. you could probably buy a speedi sleeve from any good bearing joint.

instead of perfection some times we just have to accept practicality

I know of at least 6 different rear main seals for 3300 engines.
They are used in different applications, such as wet housings, dry housings, gen sets, marine gear and such.
You can't mix and match seals and sleeves.
the seals that use a sleeve usually come with one.
some sets are to be installed as one piece not taken apart.
Usually you look seals up by engine arrangement number.

As Bob said you can't mix and match. The sleeves I have seen are much thicker than a speedi sleeve and require a seal with a larger bore to suit. Sorry if my post gave that impression.

Bob I believe the arrangement numbering system came in with the 3000 series engines 3204, 3304, 3306 etc. The older engines such as the D333 here and D330 etc relied on the serial number. At least both my machines with D330's in them do not have arrangement numbers but the one with a 3304 in it does.
Using the serial number given above SIS says it is an industrial engine not a marine engine.

The 66D motors started out with D333C motors and changed to D3306 motors .
There are marine arrangements for 66D motors.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
