I have searched the forum for this answer but either I'm asking the wrong way in the search field or just haven't found the answer I'm looking for. There has been plenty of discussion on the D330 motors but what I would like to know is the following: What were the different series of D330 motors , what years the different series ran and which one was used in my D4D 78A1859 dozer. Believe it has the 7M4300 casting on the block.

Want to get the correct manual for my engine but do not know which series applies.

All the 78A series uses the D330A 4-1/2" bore engine. The one where the water pump and fan drive are the same. They went through many changes until they got to the D330c engine with the 4-3/4" bore and separate gear drive water pump. In between there is the D330b engines but that applies to the industrial engines only although some refer to the "b" as an in between model.
The D330c engine came out in the 82J series D4D in 1968.
The 3304 engine came out with s/n 82J3444 in 1973.

The 7M4300 block assembly is correct for you s/n.

Parts book are a little different for the 78A.
Then run 78A1-up (Form #UEG0797S)and 78A4775-up (Form #36244)

There is no separate engine manual. The engine and tractor is covered in the 78A1-up service manual.

Thanks O.M for the reply. I was just trying to collect all the correct manuals for my D4D. Ordered the 4a and 4s dozer manual to cover my blade. Next will be the hydraulics manual.
Local Caterpillar sent me a copy of the original bill of sale from Caterpillar to an equipment dealer , when I sent in a request for info on my serial number on the website , but it had been copied many times or just old but you can still make out most of the print. List the different attachments that was installed .

Yes I did have the motor in my service manual and also in parts manual for my 78A. Had ordered pre-combustion chambers based on my serial number range in my parts book and when recieved they were wrong size thread. Looking back through the parts book there is a head shown as "field Modification" ,I think since I dont have my book in front of me, but something like that.
Just things like that make it interesting/agravating to work on these motors sometimes.

Guess this means any manuals with referances to serial number ranges like 56B1 up , 85B up etc, refers to industrial [ Gen sets, power units] , marine or automotive [truck?] .
