The D330 motor in my 922 loader started blowing water out the exhaust and lots of bubble in the coolant...

Upon pulling the head I discovered some damage to the head and it appears to be leaking somewhere between the threaded insert that the pre com chamber bolts into and the valve seat insert.

Are there any repair options available?

I would suggest looking for a new head, it seems to have been repaired before and further repair (even if it is possible) would cost a fortune be unlikely to be successful.

Depends on what you call cost a fortune I guess...

A new bare non genuine head is $2500. It is a discontinued line for Cat... 2s9004

That is probably a 1/4 of what the machine is worth....

.RC. where are u located in these States?

They made thousands upon thousands of these engines so a rebuilt one is not far from you. I don't think you'll get that one reworked cheaper.

Now I see you're in Australia after I made my post. There are several guys from your part who can steer you in the right direction, just give it a little time.

Where are you located. There's two cores on CL. Maybe someone can help you salvage one of these and there's enough there to reduce the cost of your head.

That probably could be repaired by someone who has experience with cast iron welding and a way to preheat the whole head in a furnace, do the repair, return the head to the furnace and let it cool slowly over hours. They would also have to remove the valve seat ahead of time and machine the welded area afterwards and replace the seat. I had a couple of Yanmar heads repaired last year that had cracks in the same area. One was entirely satisfactory, but the other had a new crack in another, less critical area when we finally got it reassembled. Had so much trouble getting the heads back from the shop, I really didn't want to send it back to them, so it's running with some block sealer and doing fine.

Unless you 're close to someone who does that kind of work, I would look for another head.

I thought I was looking for a D330 a couple years ago when I found a 922 in the weeds, but it turned out to have the D322 with a turbo. Have an old 944 that does have the D330 that we still run. Wonder if you might find a generator set with a compatable engine somewhere for not much more than the cost of just the head. I have one with a D330C that got "dusted" and needs an overhaul.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I gues you have tried Tilly's or cat expert and parts guru David Tillyard (03 62681335) down in Tassie - he might have one.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
