Does anyone know where I can get a woodruff key for the tapered end of the crankshaft on a d318 or what length it is? I tried the Cat dealer and Napa with no success. The part number my book shows is 1B8746. I know the width is 1/2" but apparently there are different lengths.

On a different note, I want to say a big thanks to CCJersey for giving me a pulley that I could use on my D318-Marine. Jim I'm still keeping my eye out for a prop for you.

I'm glad you can use some of those. In reality, I doubt you really need a key, though they had one originally. The D320 and D333 didn't have one.

I also thought you could find any half inch Woodruff key that was tall enough and cut off/grind away whatever you don't need. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that for any width key, they are all the same radius curve???
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks old magnet, thats a great source, and there are a few places that list they have them. Jmvmopar, I checked out there catalouge but nothing big enough. CCjersy, I also thought they where all the same radius but apparently there not.

I would expect that there is an SAE standard for Woodruff key dimensions .. but Caterpillar have a habit of ignoring SAE standards, and producing their own. They do this, because they often consider that SAE standards don't meet their requirements .. and they do it, because they are Caterpillar, and they can .. 😄

If it is SAE standard try www.mcmaster.com but they only list one size 1/2 x 2-3/4 in.

I suspect it is a Cat odd-ball but don't know for sure.

Really all you need is to match the width and radius to buy a key, then you will need to measure the deepest part of the keyway and add to that figure the depth of the pulley keyway. Then reduce the key to that hight. Unless it is the style that has little "wing" extentions on each end.

The D315 (D4) U models use the same key so there should be someone out there from an old engine that has one.I,m surprised that Cat doesn,t have one so take the number we gave you and try again as probably the parts man doesn,t know a key from a pad lock.

i'm with ccjersey on this key thing. that pulley is tight on the tapered shaft plus there is 2 threaded bolts holding it in place.

will have a look and see if i have an extra key in the KINGDOM.

Several places listed in the machinery trader have them. Yes, the key is probably overkill, but that is what I like about this engine. I am planning on crossing the Atlantic with this engine and I dont want to be in the middle of the ocean and thinking "maybe I should have put that key in there".
