The each of the valve lifter guides are held in by four bolts, two of which are ground finished for aligning purposes. Question is do these ground finished bolts go on the top or the bottom. The parts book illustration does not show wheather they go on the top or the bottom nor the service manual. The ones on my machine have been put in willy nilly.

Thanks for your response in advance.

My parts book shows S-1594 on top and 4B6697 on bottom. I don't know which is which though.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

They actually change location depending on your engine serial number??. Check your parts book. The S-1594 is a standard 3/8 x 1 in. x 16 tpi cap screw. The 4B6697 is 1-1/8 in. length.

Thanks for the response. I do not know what I was looking at before in the parts book but now I see that the 4B6997 goes on the bottom. Strange that the parts book lists a quantity of 9 for each. There are 6 of these guides with 4 bolt holes each.

Thanks for your response.

My parts books show 12 and 12. For the 9U.
The 5V industrial engine shows 10 & 10, probably because it shares mounting of some other component.

Hi Team,
from memory the holes for the dowels are diagonally opposite each other in the covers and maybe a tighter fit for the dowel bolts, I cannot recall if the holes in the block are counter bored to take the dowels also and therefore become evident when inspected.
As OM said, geny covers and wiring looms and etc. attach in some locations with spacers and longer bolts.
Just my 0.20c worth to check and maybe assist or not.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
