Has the 24 volt starter that was on the unit when I got it back in 1982.    Does one of the newer Delco 12 volt starters fit in place of this one? This starter has the remote located relay switch, not located on the starter itself.   But plenty of room for switch to be attached to starter.    Thanks

I don't know about the starter, but you might be interested in this. I just scanned and submitted to library the Service Manual for the D18, D15 & D11. I will also put the original up for sale cheap! If you are interested send me a PM.

If you can find a knowledgeable starter repair man, they maybe can match a new 12v motor to your starter nose cone. But finding the knowledgeable guy can be near impossible anymore.

***Ray54: I agree 110%. Seems like counter service anywhere is at an all time low. I needed a compressor belt for my yard truck, an IH Fleetstar with the Red Diamond 45o; went to 3 of the "best" suppliers in the area, first one scared to order one and 10 day wait, 2nd and 3rd places not even remotely close to what I needed.  Sadly, and quite scary, I sat down and did my own darned search and ended up with the exact fit via Amazon within 24 hours. Good grief!
Bad enough that some old timers have forgotten much or worse yet, dying off. I miss the days when you walked up, described what you needed, and they could just come back with your precious part without scanning the books for an hour looking for pictures! JM

There is no commercially available 12V later style starter. and no it is not possible to scab on to the original inertia drive starter to make it work. It has an entirely different clutch arrangement, armature and drive end housing.
It is possible to take a 40, 42 or 50MT 12V  Delco starter and convert it by changing the lever housing, the drive end housing and the drive gear itself.

Thanks for all the replies and good information to my post.   Very informative.    I have read much about the conversion process from pony to electric start.  Using the jig to hole saw and also drill and tap the mounting holes for the electric starter on machines like D69U or a 12 grader that use the D318 engine.   When done with the holes what starter bolted on there and it a modified to work unit?
