There's a great big bolt with a lock nut on it on the top side of the starter motor that holds it in the housing so it can engage the gear when you turn it on. Loosen the bolt and wiggle it out of the hole in the housing. Might have to spray some rust buster in the hole and do some tapping with a small hammer etc to get it out.

Think of the housing that has the pulley for the belt being like the bell housing of a larger engine with the starter mounted in a hole and engaging the flywheel. The D318 pony starter is the same, just smaller.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time๐Ÿ˜„

Thanks for the info, I don't have a book for a D318 yet, I hope to give it a try today.

A follow up on the starter, I got it out but not without breaking the casting where one of the 2 long bolts holds the two halves together. Is this a cat part or is it something I can get at napa?

That's a Cat part and I'm pretty sure your going to have to shop used.
Pt # 9B8851 if the starter has the solenoid switch mounting.
Pt # 9B8863 if it has the manual push button switch mounting.

Yes, that is the nose housing of the starter motor 7B2421. That is the only one listed in my late D6 parts book. It has the solenoid on it.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
