Hi
Im looking for some advice. The pony on the 318 in my Bucyrus 22B shows a bit of anti freeze when you open the L. H. drain cock. Im actually just headed out on a job with it,so ive changed oil in the pony,i have a D2 thats ran for years with a similar afliction. Will head gaskets solve this or is it a major?

head gaskets should solve it, i have a d6 that does the same thing on the same thing n the same cylinder, i just leave the petcock open to make sure it doesn't accumulate and rust the cylinder.

A new head gasket is cheap. I have one that is rusted from persistent leakage........should have fixed it long ago. Now I have a weak pony.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I have a 12 blade that has a small coolant leak too. I will openly admit that I have procrastinated in replacing the head gasket. I do make sure the draincock is open so it doesn’t fill up the cylinder and do more damage. Just be sure to have it open to clear anything, as antifreeze doesn’t burn too well; I crank the pony a round or two until I hear it pop, then close the valve. Runs good otherwise. JM

When I have warped pony heads I flatten them on the surface grinder. Have it checked when you go for the new gasket.

most simple thing is to re-check the head bolt too see if there tight? i think where to be in the 80 foot/ lb ' rage that just off the top of my head i would look it up first.

Thanks Mog . ill start there. I put the old girl to work today ,years of not being working and idling made for a shower of oil slobber. I hope that quits with some load on the engine.

Hi,
chart gives torque for early pony motors.
55 lb/ft for D318 pony motors.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

I think that is one time when it really makes sense to wear a cowboy hat.  Work it hard for 4 hours with the engine a operating temperature and don't look at the ducks flying by. I would bet it clears up fine.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
