I recently purchased an old crusher with a D318 5V power unit for power. It will only run on 5 cylinders, occasionally firing on the 6th, kind of sounds like a valve problem (makes a schh sound when running) have not had the valve cover off to see yet. Any ways fired it up today and the throttle lever felt like something fell apart inside the governor. It would run at an idle, and when I went to throttle it up it didn’t respond and I could move the lever all the way around. When it got to a point it shut the fuel off, but wouldn’t open it up. I have a parts book from one of the 9us that I had, but not seeing how the lever is connected to the rest of the governor.

Where you located in MI? Allot of hours on the engine? Could be a valve not seating right or a bad injector nozzle if its not firing all the time. I have rebuilt some D315's and could rebuild your 318 if you wanted.

The two problems are probably unrelated, it sounds as if you have a valve or or stuck injection pump problem and the governor control ratchet/shaft has fallen apart.

I know the problems are not related, and I have to tackle the throttle problem first. It still makes the ratcheting sound when you move it, so that part is likely alright, but it’s like the shaft has disconnected from whatever it connects to. Guess I’m just going to have to take it apart and see what's in there. Just wondering if there is anything I need to watch out for i.e. springs that will fly out at me, or parts that need to be timed, I have not been into the governor on one of these.

The meter says 5000 some odd hours, but I don't believe it, sounds way to low for a machine this old. As far as rebuilding it, unless it can be done extremely cheap I will most likely sell or scrap this engine and put something a little more modern on the crusher.

I had a problem with a 318 I had missing on 1 cylinder, turned out it was a bad fuel injector on the cylinder that fired before the cylinder that was giving the problem, it was allowing combustion gasses into the fuel galley causing the next cylinder in line to get little fuel

On that injector pump you can pull the side cover and take a look no problem.

On the hour meter look carefully as there is a digit to the left that is hard to see

Usual problem is the ratchet teeth wear out and won't hold or the spring doesn't help the pawl engage. In some severe cases the shaft tang wears out and you loose coupling to the governor shaft.

Alright, took the throttle apart today and as you guys suggested the shaft tang was worn, and the shaft that it fits in to was slightly striped from it slipping out. I’m thinking that I will shim the control out so that it stays in place till I figure out if this engine is a keeper or not. Now I guess the next step is to take off the hood and valve cover and have a look at the valves to try to determine if I have a valve or injector problem. Thanks for the help.
Oh, and the hours are 05871, still sounds low for an engine that old. It hasn't impressed me yet as it needs a whiff of either to start after cranking with the pony moter for 15-20 min. It does smoke a bit more than I think it should, and it was close to 40 today.

I bought a 318 engine that had came out of a crane It showed signs on the exhaust stack of a lot of slobbering .It missed on # 5 cllinder .I stared this engine ,and covered up the raditor to purposely make it run hotter for a while . the engine run lot cleaner ,but still missed on #5 ,so I am thinking with out pulling the head that there is a lot of carbon built up under the valve seats due to the long idling hours in the crane . I had changed the injector nozzels ,did not help this engine
I gess my question would be had this engine idled a lot of hours in that crusher application?
