If the crankshaft is grooved then your friend is right.
If the bearing spun in the rod. Then you need to replace the connecting rod.
chances are it just pounded the hollow pin up in the rod. i'm thinking you're committed to pulling the head and removing the connecting rod.
You may be able to pull the piston down and out through the inspection port.
It will be tricky to squeeze the rings to slip it back in but I know it can be done on a D2!

Oh great I think I'm interested in one of those then , thank you. There are no grooves worn into the crank as far as I can tell with my fingernail. But trying to pull the piston down and out through the side cover may be pretty tight- and yeah getting it back in- it was hard enough to get the rear cotter pin out by "feeling" for it with a pair of needle nose on the backside of the bearing cap haha..
You will at the least be in for a crank grind.
