I have a D311 ser.# 7s7629 I am going to have to some engine work on. The motor was stuck, but got it free and seemed ok and runs good. But now it is throwing a lot of oil, or fuel out of the exhaust, it still has good oil pressure. I am looking for some starting point ideas, injectors, or rings, pistons, and liners or something else I haven't thought of? And is the cat servicemen's book the best reference source for rebuilding this motor? Thanks

I take it this is a stationary engine? One of my D2's was running exactly the same way when I first got it. I think it had idled a lot during its life. No blade on the machine. I hooked a tumble-bug scraper to the back and pulled that around for two hours on a hot summer day and it totally cleared up. No more spit out the stack at all. You have any way to put a good load on this engine?

Well it's in a crane,(guessing it idled most of it's life) so it might be hard to give it a good work out. But gives me an excuse to convert it to a dragline 😖mile:

As a substitute for a hard workout, try somehow to get it good and hot and keep it that way for a few hours. Maybe find a 195 degree thermostat, put cardboard in front of the radiator/oil cooler etc. I think that's the thing that makes the difference.

The hotter thermostat will help keep it from doing it again.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
