well guys looking for some info and help. i pulled the trigger on a nice little 212 grader (9 t 561) but the motor is out of it. what i got told was it a Pre cup problem and well yes i do believe they did as the head is in less the good shape it looks like they had bean running it and letting the water in to the cylinder as the top of the piston is all eaten away. with 20256 hours on the clock i would say there some wear on the rest of the motor too and the pony motor needs work too but i got spears for that. can a guy get new vale seats to cut in to the old head or can i make new seats? plan B is to use a D311 PTO(7 s 8112) motor for a donor will that work? i will have to change the bell-housing and clutches pony mounting from block to block. my other concern is the PTO is rated at 49 HP 1500 rpm and the 212 only rated at 35 HP. nothing like having a few extra pony's but that a little over 20% increase it would be fun having a hot rod grader but with the 212 having weak mold boards would it self destruct? right now it has blade extension on it and i a total rookie on a grader. when looking for a book to rebuild the d311 i would be looking for a serviceman manual that will give me all the specks and seize as well as torque sequence right? thanks for your help boys.

Thanks for the pics and videos, Martin. You're really making me feel like a slacker, heck it's been three whole months since I last hauled home another Cat to add to my collection - you've been nearing a one-a-week average here lately, lol. The engine manual you're looking for should be the Servicemen's Reference Book, Caterpillar Diesel Engines, 4" Bore 4 Cylinder D311. The one I have covers the D311 Industrial, Gen Set, Marine, D2 Tractor, and No.212 Grader all in the same book. Has all the specifications, clearances, torque sequences, etc.

You asked about valve seats - my local machine shop installed a couple new valve seats in the cylinder head of my 5U D2 because of a couple pits that were right in the seat area on one cylinder, they could've cut them out but it would've meant recessing the valves deeper in that one than the other cylinders, which isn't good. Instead they put new seats in and returned the valves to where they needed to be. I don't know who they got them from but they are available. Sorry but can't answer the rest of your questions.

Valve seat inserts are available. Says they are for the 4F1599 casting number head but I don't see why they wouldn't work on others. Part # 1H0230 for both Intake and Exhaust. A good head rebuild shop should also be able to do the repairs and probably source their own inserts.
If hp is a concern use the original 212 injection pump set up.
Check the difference between your oil pan set ups between the two engines. May be a difference in oil pumps and scavenge arrangement.
The manual your looking for is the "Servicemen's Reference Book" for the 4" bore diesel engine. Covers D311 Industrial, Electric Set, Marine, D2 Tractor and #212 Grader.

On a 311 its important to maintain valve height because if you recess the valves to much by just grinding the seats the decompression wont work.

Have fun with the grader, I think it would be fun to run one.

Moog, Going Thru my Cat service stuff, I found a Valve Seat Inserts Section. For the D311, Head Part#- 4f1599 uses a Valve Seat insert Size of 1 3/4 x 1 7/16 x 1/4. Cat Part #1H233 for both inlet & Exhaust. I will try & scan the page when I can, Ken

I would clean up the cylinder head and check for cracks before getting machine shops involved with valve inserts, any cracks will be easy to spot from the seat area to the pre chamber thread.

that's great Ken. i they sure did a good job of getting the info out back in the good old days. TC your right i will do a crack test and see what show up. as for taking it to the machine shop i am it lol. i try to work on most of my own stuff cus really i can't afford to get a head rebuilt at 200$ per h plus parts. i seen some questionable work come out of the local shop so i would be driving 3h to drop off a head. this way if i get really good (lol) i can help fund the toy fund thanks for your help boys. i would be lost with out you

p.s how much can be taken off the head for resurfacing .015? i would say no more than .030 max?

After a visual inspection, have the head shop hot tank it and magnaflux it for cracks. If none, order up the new valves ($22 ea.) and have the shop plane the head, fit new guides and valve seats ($200 at my shop)
