There is 2 different 311 cat engines, totally different, and I believe the oil pan and and oil pick up are different and maybe the governor, the early d311 was also used in U series D2,s
A serial number would tell, but there is a difference between new and old D311's. I believe the new models will have the injection pump on the right side of the engine (looking at it from the flywheel end) and the old version has the injection pump on the left side. The new D311 models are the NA version of the D320 turbocharged engine used in some of the 922 wheel loaders If you get a set with one of the old versions, you would probably only need to change some peripheral parts like governor, oil pan and oil pump pickup bell etc. The D2 tractor engine never had as complicated a lube system as the D6 for example, but there are probably differences in the oil pan and pump suction.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄
