Went to look at an old D3 79U2136 for sale near me.

Current owner has not had it all that long. He recently had a precom chamber break in half with the top section bursting out and knocking a hole through the tappet cover. I saw the broken pc and it seems to have split where the two halves are joined.
Anyways, he'd repaired the mess and fitted a new pc chamber and worked it a bit thereafter.

I told him I'd like to put in some fuel and work the machine for a few hours before I decide to make an offer. 45 minutes of pushing and bang, same scenario as before, a broken pc chamber and a hole through the tappet cover, on a different cylinder this time.

Any ideas as to the cause???

The motor seemed to run ok and had not started to run hot at all yet. Owner showed me the pc that broke while he was using it at is not pitted or rusted at all, just a clean break around the middle.

I'm no expert but at this stage all I can put it down to is poor quality aftermarket parts.
I wouldn't think that there could be such a pressure buildup as to do this but I could well be wrong.

All the pre-combustion chambers are made with a two piece joint that is furnace brazed together. Even the Cat originals occasionally fail but I'd say you are right about poor quality after market parts or failed quality control on originals. They do live in a pretty abusive environment.

Just an update on this...
I refitted with new cat precoms and had the same thing happen again as well as a glow plug blowing out. Pulled the injector pump and accessory drive shaft, borrowed the correct pump timing fixture and re-timed it and solved the problem. Whoever had worked on it previously must have done some guess work on the pump timing. Strangely enough it started ok and sounded fine while running.

That's pretty unique!!! Do you suspect a lean mixture (hi temp) or over fueling? Hear about the occasional failure but not one that eats pre-com chambers and spits out glow plugs.

Hey guys I have heard of this before although in newer engines maybe around the 3406 mark? I think it came down to a dodgy batch of pre coms from Cat. I guess the batch could be quite large as to explain it happening on numerous occasions
