Good mornin' Gents, I'm replacing the bushings in the carrier rollers on my 5j. It looks like I can get the bushings but the shaft looks pretty worn. The parts book calls out a sleeve with the shaft, 5B5745 shaft and 5B5744 sleeve. My question is, what does this sleeve look like? I've only taken one roller off but I see no sleeve. Thank you in advance, you guys are the Best, no pun intended.

It appears there is a sleeve that the oil seal runs on. I had to check the book. It's been a lot of years since I had to go into mine. The 5U book shows two different over tops; both use the same part numbers you give, only one of the illustrations actually shows the bushing. The old sleeve will probably be shot, I'm guessing, if the carrier was wobbling around, and I wouldn't bet you could press it off in good shape if it is usable. It wouldn't be difficult to make, but some of these guys would have to tell you what steel to use.

Thanks Jack. I think I see the sleeve now, doesn't look too bad so I may just leave it there.

Is Hangtown the historic name for Placerville, or is there another Hangtown in the USA?

Yep, Hangtown, P'ville, lots of history here. And lots of yellow fever.

I posted in the for sale/wanted page but for those like me that don't look there often I'll post here too. I need the bushings, 2 each 9B9726 and 9B9762. Also a roller 9B858. Appreciate any help.

How shot are the rollers? Beyond welding up?

One, I think is still usable, the other, well not so much. Once it gets light outside I'll try to snap a pic. Thanks.

Thought I should finish this thread and say thanks to Jack for your help. I was unable to find another carrier roller or the flanged bushing. The flange is the thrust surface so I cut the flange off of the old bushing and used it with a new plain bush, I think it will work o.k. Put everything back together but need to adjust the tracks before the test drive. Again, thanks to all for this resource, what a bunch of great folks!

Tracks should have about inch&half/two inches of slack across the top when properly adjusted. No need to wear out prematurely all the parts you just replaced! 👍

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
