Hello all. I am new to the club. I have had for a several months a D2 5J. Bought it with both engines running, but she needs some loving. I purchased it to use with my grandsons, to teach them to drive a crawler and have fun with it. So I removed the dozer blade ( free to who ever wants it). I have been doing the servicing things . Pony motor oil change and flush, new spark plugs... Main engine oil and filter change. Injector pump flush and oil change, starter pinion flush and oil change, greasing .... And the diesel fuel system filters and housing changed/cleaned. I can’t believe that the main engine even ran with all the dirt ( mud!) that was in filters / tower. I then took the transfer pump apart and cleaned it. The gears looked really good and the body had no scratches or scoring. The fuel pressure on the gauge came up after that , but.... it only come to the top of the red on the gauge when starting and the pony is turning it over. I have always had to use a squirt of starting fluid to get it to start and still do.

Question—— where should the fuel pressure be on the gauge when cranking with the pony?
And any ideas about what to check to get the pressure higher.

Thanks

Paul

It will sometimes be in the white but should be in the green. There is a spring and plunger in the housing where the fuel line couples on to, others correct me if i'm thinking of the 5U's. it sometimes gets dirt under the seat and will drop the pressure. There is also a grease fitting on the main flywheel to lube the clutch shaft pilot bearing also.

Your pressure is about average for an old tractor. Usually gets right up in the green when the main starts (with good filters). I don’t think the lower than desired pressure is causing it to be hard to start. The gauge is measuring pressure AFTER the filters, so under load it may drop into the red indicating it’s costing you power. You won’t be able to get good power with plugged filters as well as a tractor with a higher pressure system, but there’s a lot of filter area there so unless you have cruddy fuel, you probably won’t have to change the filters very often.

Rome is right about the relief valve being a common problem. New poppets aren’t too expensive and I have seen the spring be rusted in two but I doubt that’s the problem with yours since you have some pressure indicated while cranking it over. Still a new spring only costs a few dollars and you know that isn’t a reason for low pressure once you replace it. Check the seat surface the poppet sits against when closed, it’s possible to get an erosion into the cast iron that prevents it sealing properly.

It’s a great idea to put a prefilter in the line ahead of the lift pump just to protect the gears and internal surfaces from any avoidable wear. Later CAT used a fine mesh brass screen on all their machines but a spin on furnace filter works even better.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

This is my pressure when running at full throttle. it comes up in to the green ( on this gauge).

Any ideas on the hard start??

Been there, done that. check the line from the tank 100%, i had a ton of crap in the tower like u..... it comes from the tank and with a low spot in the line it'll almost plug shut. with a crappy tank ur just wearing gears worse and filling the tower again. get a filter till u can go though the tank.

Hard starting could be an indication of low compression on your main engine.
Could also be as simple as letting your pony run a bit longer to warm the main engine up a bit more.
I read somewhere on here a long time ago about a “2-smoke start” on colder days....start and engage the pony and by the time you smoke 2 cigarettes the main is ready to fire. I tried this once back in my smoking days it works real good....

My D2's gauge barely registers in the white even when running at high idle but it starts pretty easily. I will have to get it dyno'd to see if it's producing its published hp. I don't know how accurate the gauge is

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
