Does anyone know where I might buy/borrow the tool/spanner for removing the combustion chamber on a D2 5J 5503 SP?

I'm based in the UK but any information would be much appreciated. Even a part number would be a starting point!

Many thanks.

Can't remember the size but the usual approach is to make one up from a hex head cap screw.

I have the orginal cat tool ,and its just a piece of solid steel stock cut into an octagone ,about 4 or 5 " long .Mine is stepped half and half ,chamber size on one half and 1 and 5/16 on other half .If you had a local machine shop make it up on a milling machine ,it would not have to be stepped ,just strait octagone to insert into the chamber ,and same size socket on the other .I usually use a 3/4 impact gun and socket with tool to remove the chambers as they can be bears to get out if they have been in a long time .I always use antiseizure compound on the threads when I install the chambers with the proper torque .

That sort of rings a bell......7/8" cap screw will have a 1-5/16" wrench size.

I pulled my D4's and had a friend machine the tool. I tried the hex and they would not budge and I was hesitant to corner the bolt or the chamber. You could probably stack nuts on the bolt to get a full bite if you can't get something put together.

Below is a thread with quite a bit of input from a whole host of people. I had a pretty good cheater on the breaker bar to bust them loose too. Don't forget to drain your coolant before you start.

The tool set that MBS Manfacturing shows is used to remove and intall precombustion chambers and bonnets on the later 5u -d2 and d-47u ,and d- 9u or 311 ,315 ,318 cat engines .I just used those tools Sunday installing thee chambers and bonnets in my 7u d-4
3J ,5J or 3400 Cat engines are different and need a octagone tool or a made up tool from nuts or bolt heads to fit the open hex in the chamber after the injector is removed

Can't find it in my notes but I believe the working end is 1-5/16 hex...it is not octogon shape. The larger end is just for grip. The hex wrench mentioned is an allen wrench for the set screws.

The larger end of the tool fits in the precombustion chamber ,the 1"5/16 end for the socket .
Another tip I found is to clean the threaded end on the inside of cylinder head if the head is removed with a wire brush, and spray penetrating oil on that one protuding thread ,as carbon builds up filles the one thread that is exposed in the cylinder .I have seen the threads stripped and pulled out of the head with the carbon binding the threads as the chamber is unscrewed ,then your talking a machine shop job !
Seems like a impack wrench works better for removing the chambers

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
