Does anybody know when replacing steering clutches and brakes what is proper or acceptable procedure to reinstall the drums and steering clutch hubs back on tractor? The servicemans reference manual is very vague. Its says just reinstall inner and outer drums .Do they need pressed on like 933 or just tighten up and torque bolt and bend down lock tab. They show pressing the sprockets on but nothing about drums or clutches. What has anybody else done that worked or didn't Thanks Scotty

My D2,5J service manual says steering clutch inner drum to shaft press fit 15 tons
final drive flange { that would be the outer drum } to final drive pinion press fit 15 tons
933 would be same

Hi Team,
make VERY sure all the splines are DRY---NO OIL or GREASE etc. in the hub and on the shaft.

Press to 10 to 12 tons Maximum or you risk cracking the drum hubs--I know this from experience when an Apprentice at The Dealer many moons ago.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

For my D2 I cleaned the tapered shafts very well, set the clutch pak on a rack on the wood stove, sprayed silicone on the male end of the shaft and bolt. I had the impact gun ready to go. about a hour later with welding gloves I installed clutch pak firmly by hand then quickly applied the Impact. Not by the book but the best I could do with what I had to work with.

In my mind suitable for a play tractor.

You won't get those guys tight enough just with the nut. Better to seat them with a bfh and a brass drift. Then put the nut on.

Its kind of goofy if you don't have a hollow ram for starters, then the adapters for the threads and the rest of the bits and pieces.
If you have the hollow ram, then you are halfway there! The rest of the pieces can be made as necessary.

First one I ever did, I did like Steve suggested, figuring it is only a "Play Tractor". When I got to the point of pressing sprockets then I borrowed a CAT Press kit which had all the bits and pieces in it. I used it again on the second clutch project I did.
Is the first one still going?
Yes and I ABUSE it way more than a "Play Tractor"!

A couple guys that I bought a lot of used machinery parts from were veterans of the Caterpillar shop. Both said something to the effect that, "... yes they have the push/pull portapower but no one in the shop used it. They preferred, always used, and got away with" the afore mentioned bfh and brass drift. So that's what I used. I got away with it. That don't necessarily mean that it's correct, but you'll probably get away with it if you're careful and seat that hub until it won't move further.

won't work but I would be afraid of cracking a Bearing race! On a "Toy Tractor" you may never notice it if its parading around but what about the next owner? At the bare minimum use heat for Thermal expansion as Steve recommends. You will be surprised at how much it will expand just from a couple of hundred degrees F!

What about when pressing on the sprockets? If you had the 8B7548 Push Puller and all the attachments to pull the sprocket, why could you not use the same Push Puller to Push(Press) the sprocket back in place? I believe the Push Puller is rated at 18 tons. The sprockets need to be installed with 15 tons of pressure. Talking about this set up to Old Magnet some time back, I guess the only question mark would be what size extension or cheater bar to use to put that much force on the push Puller. What do you guys think. Am I just barking up a tree with this idea?
