I have a d2 that has both steering brakes stuck. Has anyone had this problem? Does the shaft there on come out? I've tried to heat it couple of times and haven't had any Luck. Can anyone help me on this? Thank you.

Is it just the levers that are stuck, or is the brake bands stuck to the drums? More info please.

The brake band are free the linkage is stuck to the shaft that it pivots on. Does the shaft come out?

Are talking about the linkage that pivots on the pin with the external keeper plate? That pin can be very hard to remove. You might have to remove the final drive to get things moving if it was full of water.

The pivot arm that u talk about is the one that is sezied up on the shaft. The machine didn't have any water in there just alot of fine crude. Do u think heating it up will help free it up? Thank you

Don't know if Ray ever resolved this but I'm now working on my brakes and that pivot was also stuck for me. I hit it with PB Blaster and heat and it didn't move. Just for grins I tried the "rails in the water" trick and lo and behold it freed right up. If only I could get water into all those broken studs....
Anyhoo, my left brake band is broken (rusted through) so I need to change it out.

Is that possible through the small adjusting window? Does that pivot have to be removed because I can't move the pivot bolt either.

The D2 is a one piece band and you will have to pull the final. It's for the best anyway with that much water damage. Now you can fix everything in that area just right

Sounds good Jeff. I'm checking with Tim first because he's local but if that's a bust, I'll contact you - thanks very much! I was hoping that I could just thread the band out of the adjustment hole because it looks wide enough. The reason is that I wanted to heat up the brake drum to free it up.
It very much surprised me this morning to discover that the entire clutch disk group is not stuck to the drum - I can see it move (which I guess means the splines are worn....) but the clutch lever does not disengage the clutch so I guess the clutch pack is stuck internally, which heating the drum probably wouldn't help anyway. Doggone it.
The 2S blade mount bolts look like they're laughing at my 3/4 drive socket set, and the master pin just looks nasty. I might have to commit the cardinal sin and heat the rail bosses around the pin so that I can drive it out to split the track. Oh well, I do like fixing things :dizzy:

Everybody heats the links to get the pin out!
No Worries!
You have to heat it up to get it back in unless you are renting a press from CAT.
Let me know on the brake parts.

When I work for Cat dealer -

Put the pin over the rear sprocket. We cut an X in ends of master pin with torch, then drove it out with 16 lb hammer and punch. You will be burning into end of pin so slag will be flying right back at you.

Not easy chore when they are really stuck!

New Master Pins are a foregone conclusion either way.

Heating the rail bosses may cause you problems down the line.
