Since my parts book covers the earlier batch of ser#s, I'll post these questions here. Besides, you wanted to inspect your tractor anyway...right? 😆

1. Is there a screen of some sort in the fuel outlet portion of the seat tank? I'm gingerly digging out the 100% artery clogging goo, and I get the feeling there might be a screen there. I dont want to punch through this ham handedly. I see a faint outline of something in the opening, but an EZ out does not seem to budge anything.

2. Does the pencil in the pic represent an unauthorized hole by a midnight drilling madman? This is the lower row of the seat-to-fender attaching bolts. I believe there should be 2, not 3.

3. Just confirming the center fender brace (across the trans, in front of the seat) has a square or rectangular shaped opening on the left side where the fuel line crosses over the final drive. The right side for whatever reason has a more oval shaped cutout that is not in use.

Thanks for taking a peek!

Both of my Seat Tanks have two holes along the rear bottom flange. Why?, not a clue. Maybe for Lightening purposes, vent holes????😆

Not sure about the strainer, but judging by the copious amounts of SPOOGE in your tank I think I'd add one just for the hell of it.

As far as the fender brace, yes, the notch for the fuel line is "squareish". the other unknown notch is for the PTO lever link to pass through (could also be a doorway for mice).

When I re-skinned the back of the seat tank on my D2 I managed to get a good look at the inside. The forward outlet that the fuel line attaches to had no screen in it, but there was a short, curved pickup tube inside the tank that was welded to the back side of the forward outlet fitting. It reached almost to the center of the tank bottom and curved downward until the opening was about 3/8" off the bottom of the tank for fuel pickup. Then there was also a drain plug on the very bottom of the tank that just consisted of a threaded bung and plug pointing straight down.

In this picture you can barely see one of the support brackets for the pickup tube, welded to the tank bottom just inside of the baffles. At the time I didn't think to get a better picture of it. Also note the mounting holes in question, barely visible in this shot but show the area you previously asked about.

Thanks Toby! What a wonderful job on that tank!!!

I'm not sure why CAT put 3 holes on that bottom row and only used 2 of of them, but I'll keep all three. I've straightened out that section, it was dang near bent all the way over on both sides of the tank..

I've made a template, so the seat will line up with the fenders statically. And will post some progress on my fender thread.

I appreciate the insight on the fuel pickup. I was halfway thinking of pulling the back skin and removing a dent and cleaning out from the inside. One thing at a time right now. 😆

Rich, thanks for the pics too!

You can clear your clog with a steam cleaner if you have access to one. A good thing to do first even if you open up the tank.

Rich, I've picked out a nicer looking doorway to replace the smoke wrench created cave opening. I'll also get full use of the 4 bolts that should be mounting up the bracket. 👍

Yeah, yeah, yeah....I just could not leave well enough alone. That tank was just crying out for attention. Remember, its the sole cause that started this whole fixerupperitis affliction. Lack of fuel coming from the source is reason enough to do exploratory surgery. Right?

So, the doctor was in the house, and was overheard saying....here...hold my beer and watch this. 24 seconds later, a precise surgical pattern was transferred from his cargo shorts pocket CAD machine to the patient. (special note, the seemingly random outline is in fact carefully calculated to ensure dents, dings, and aberrations of straightness would ensure the panel could be beaten straight) The Makita made short work of the home brewed holder-thingy on the back of the seat and the nurse handed over the razor sharp Sawzall. Everyone held their breath.

Minutes later, the source of the artery clogging mess was confirmed. Just as diagnosed. The tension in the air melted away.

Sure....lesser doctors would have tapped a new fuel outlet in the tank, ran an electric feed pump for good measure, slapped a band-aid on the patient and could have said....run a can of carb cleaner down the hatch and she'll be fine. But noooooooo....not this doc.

Well, as you can tell, this is merely chapter one. I've got about 6.45 years of cleaning ahead of me.

I'll post back when appropriate.

Thought you all would want an update.

PS...truer words were never spoke, as were inscribed our our fuel tank caps.

Yikes! I believe the technical term for that substance in your tank is "Gack". More commonly known in laymans terms as "Spooge".

zoo....thanks for the clarification. I have amended my radio-graphic carbon dating request to NASA to include "Spooge - sourced locally from a CAT D2" as opposed to "Crap - fuel tank, ordinary".

You can imagine the ah-ha moment as I discovered the long lost nut that must have landed in the tank while the former owner was juggling fasteners out by the barn in 1941 during a refueling stop.

Old-n-slow,

I think it's called "Gunga-muffy".

Judging by the chunks of rust, my guess is that tank had water in it for a LONG time! All the more reason to preach about keeping them FULL! I also notice that the petroleum sub-strate in that goo indicates a low quality fuel was used in this machine.
Also that stuff is called "icky goo-goo" by people who find it won't wash out of their clothes, except for the part that transferred to your better half's clothes that were in the washer too!
