D2 Running better, still needs help

I had more time to fiddle with the D2 today. It now runs on all 4 cylinders. I had a spare D2 head that I borrowed some injectors out of.

However, The #4 cylinder. (I am calling #4 the one closest to the pony motor) is not running correctly. This is one of the cylinders that I changed out an injector on. It makes a pretty good thumping noise (Doesn't sound like a knock) that goes away if I crack the injector line to stop the flow of fuel.

I had a Farmall MD that did the same thing, but I wound up selling it so I never really got to the bottom of it.

I am going to switch that injector with one from a good running cylinder the next change I get, and I guess I will pull the crankcase side cover and make sure the rod isn't coming apart, but it doesn't sound like a metal on metal knock...

Any ideas?

What is the serial number of your tractor & I can give you some specs on the fuel setting to check. It could be a few things causing it so it,s good to check the rod brg. & it could be a worn wrist pin bushing & also try switching the fuel injection pump down on the inj. housing from # 4 to #1 but make sure you line the marks up correctly on the pump plunger gear with the two marks on the rack bar.

Forgot to say that yes the cylinders are #1 is the front toward the radiator & are then 2-3 & 4 which is the back one as you stated by the starting engine.

Didn't get to look at it today, spent the day rebuilding a govenor on my 1945 JD A. Hopefully I will get to the D2 on Saturday...

JD if all fails check the lifter screw setting on #4 inside the injection housing but you,ll need a set of depth mikes to do it. The engine will need to be on TDC on the flywheel mark for #4 & the lifter will just be starting up from the bottom position when your on #4 firing stroke & the setting adjustment for the screw is 1.736" & is the same for all the screws following the same procedure with each cyl. on TDC firing stroke.While doing this setting if the screw is in a different position than just starting up from the bottom position then give the engine one full turn & see where your at now. You may need someone to help you so you can observe the screw position while it,s being checked but the engine has to be on TDC firing order. If at sometime the flywheel was put on wrong it will upset all the procedure.Cat in later years had one of the flywheel holes drilled off center from the rest so you can,t get the flywheel on wrong & not in time with the marks.Should have said tht setting with the mikes is with the inj. pump out & is the depth from he top of the inj. housing where the pump bolts down to the center of the screw that the pump plunger gear & plunger hooks in to.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I can dig up my serviceman's refernce guide for that.

I managed to get my main clutch un stuck today. So hopefully after this work rotation I will get a chance to play with it some more.
