I have a 1953 model d2 5u that I'm trying to take the water pump out of. I'm having troubles getting the fan belt to come loose. I took the fan blade off and I think the bearing are bad. I was wondering if the 44 model hydraulic unit would come off with the radiator in one piece? Thank u

Ray have you removed the two locking tabs in the threaded portion behind the rear rim of the fan pulley? If so and it still doesn't turn, get a screwdriver and gently lift in the slot where the two tabs are, to relieve the binding pressure on the rim so that it can be turned. Spray plenty of penetrating fluid on those threads and work the rear rim to and fro relative to the front rim to loosen it up.
I'm planning to remove my radiator next week with the #44 attached as I just bolted it up and now need to change out a gasket behind the front accessory drive cover.

Ray, here's the split in the rear hub I mentioned. If the retaining bolt had been tightened really tight, that split might not be releasing fully. Carefully insert a screwdriver and pry it open a little - not too much to break it. Do both splits, 180 degrees apart. Then check that there aren't burrs on the edge of the retaining lock slots in the front / threaded hub. There's nothing else that should be preventing it from turning other than damaged threads.

That slit( both of them) should be around .075 for the 30 degrees or so each one covers. If they are crushed in with the bolt to far could have skipped a thread. Not a lot of thread area covered by the rear hub so it would have to be really rusted bad to stick. So gentle tapping with a brass drift and heat may help. The tensioner will turn even if the pump is locked up.

Since you are taking the water pump off anyway, just unbolt it, let it tilt down to slip the belt off and then you can deal with the adjuster later. Note, you want to remove only the section of the pump just behind the pulley, not the whole housing that connects the block and head.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
