Welcome Martin
When I got my D2 I had the same issue, I would tear into it before you have to use your welding skills to fix a exit hole.
The main bearings are bushings, the one on the flywheel end is kept in position by a dowell pin, it also doubles as a thrust bearing, in my case the the dowell pin hole was ob-longed and pin beat up so bad that the bearing/bushing would slide back n forth as the crank saw fit. I ended up making new bushings to match my engine.
Where r u located
well thanks for the fast info. i hear you on fixing it befor it fixesit self for good. i gess this is why we have long winnters in canada. i gess i will start taking it apart.
Actually, the thrust bearing is on the output or geared end of the crank. If it was on the flywheel end the fix would be to remove the flywheel and bearing housing only and repair. Unfortunately, that is not the case, you will need to remove the pinion control, pony complete, and then disasemble the pony to replace the bearing on the thrust end. It is a lot of work, but very rewarding, and you will likely learn lots of things you didn't know about your Cat. Ask me how I know!
BTW, You right track seems to be on backwards...

If I had a rebuilt spare from a 5J, I would go through that as it will be much cheaper and quicker.
It should basically need inspection and maybe a few new gaskets.

now i just need to track down the right service manuel for the pup. get some spec on compeshion and clerance what are the chance of finding anuther mag as the spare is mising it's and the one on needs a new cover it bean bash in really bad but still works.
If you're like me you'd probably want to get the new toy "Playable" ASAP. I'll second that about swapping the pony motors. You'll have to pull the pony off anyway to rebuild it, I'd just check out the "new" pony motor and if all looks good, put the mag on it and drop it on your D2. You might need to swap the Pony Manifold (the top of the motor) if it's different than your other one (Caterpillar sells the gasket for around $10). The basic pony block is all the same for the early/late D2's and D4's. You can always go back and rebuild the original pony motor for a back up or trading material.👍
BTW, while you're at the Cat dealer ordering your gasket, also order the seal for the coolant passage between the pony manifold and diesel head. They tend to seep coolant after you disturb them when the rubber is old and hard .

Thanks for the correction, its been a while.
I should post a Disclamer with my advise, Warning poster has CRS=The advise might not be worth u paid for it
zootownjeepguy you read me like a book. i bet i would chance it a little longer to pay with my new toy but with where being no blade for it and my play ground's 2 hour a way i can be content with back it out of the shop and check both stearing cluch seam to work. i am all so ok with taking something that work's just fine and ripping it abpart to make it "Better". now if i can get the parts lady at the local cat shop to get me my parts book and service manuls. i try once and she keeps telling me a need a 5 #afer the letter's. i know cat webpage say they will reperint, i think if it's not in her computer she don't know a thing.
