I have just finished installing a 4u engine/clutch on a 5J chassis and am buttoning up loose ends. When I tried to install my diesel hood I
found the pony motor solonoid was against hood. How do I rotate the starter to position the solonoid to appropriate position?
P.S. the cat runs great and I will am ready to put blade on and play.

There's a bolt with a nut on the housing that holds the pony starter. That's a set-screw, loosen it up and you should be able to turn/remove the starter. You can't rotate the starter very much because the starter housing will get caught in the teeth on the ring gear. I would pull the starter out to see what I'm babbling about. Also, don't tighten the set-screw up too much, you could break something.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a go. I figured this was the answer but was hesitant to do something stupid at this point when I'm so close
to playtime....

The set screw has a specific detent hole in the starter nose. Is this starter motor new to the installation? There are a couple if different motor housings with different mounting bolt indexing to align the solenoid location. Seems like you may have the wrong one, probably have the one for the D6.

Old Magnet, I saw exactly what you mentioned last night when I removed starter. The starter motor is what came with the 4U engine/pony.
I do have the starter motor from the 5J pony that is oriented correctly so this should solve my problem. It is in my garage so I'll get it and
install it when I return home this week. I also have a complete 5U that is 20 yards from my project cat but it is destined for drive/steering clutch
work next summer so I don't want to borrow any parts from it. It has correct orientation also.

P.S. I've been reading acmoc for a year getting ready for my D2 projects and have gotten lots of solid pointers from everyone although this is
the first thread I've initiated. I told the guys at work that it is an honor to have my first thread be replied to by "Zootownjeepguy and Old magnet"
Thank you both very much. I will post pictures of this 1946 5J / 1948 4U combo cat when I get my blade and cab put on. I've got strip pits on
our family farm that I will use commission / test this guy on. Cab is just about ready, it's from a fork truck and I think will look pretty cool. I have
a brother and brother n law that want to use it so I have to have a cab on it. Thanks again guys.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
