How the heck do I replace the belt for my electric start pony motor. The manual says you need to press the pulley off but it still wan't real clear. Seems like it should be easier than that to just change a belt shouldn't it?

You would think, but sadly no.
Wait, looking at your pic, I see you have the cast pulley with 3 bolts, not the sheet metal pulley with a central nut. What to the 3 bolts do? Any body?

That was my tought. I tried removing the 3 bolts yesterday but the pulley didn't seem to budge.
If that is all you gotta do I must have a "special one".

Theres a procedure in the service manual to follow. the later ones had just a center nut to remove and it slid off. This style is a pain but needs to be done correctly, you have to seperate the gear housing and rotate it to use a driver to press the pulley from the shaft. I cant scan the service manual at the moment to describe it better, maybe someone else can put it on here.

I'll catch hell for this from some folks on here, but here is what I did to remedy the problem. I cut a small section of the outside lip on the pulley just enough to slip the belt off. Yes, I know I "Bubba'd " it up, no big deal to me. Belt hasn't fallen off or been chewed up. I did round the edges of the lip after cutting so there would be no sharp edges to chew into the belt.

Early units with the three cap screws need to be pressed apart.
Later single nut versions the pulley can be removed.
One of Cats dumber ideas on the early versions.

Thanks Rome/KG. I'll re-read the procedure tonight when I get home.

Thanks Old Magnet for the scans.

Definately not one of Cat's better ideas! In my 18years working at their "proving ground" I've seen a few dandy ideas - thats for sure!

My housing has one of the ears already broke off so I might be better off to look for another one anyway. I guess if I break it more I'm not out much.

Here's where its currently broke. Probably not worth messing with other than to learn how to press it apart.

Yes, pretty common to see the adjustment bracket broken. Change to the later style with center nut shaft for the pulley is desirable but I seem to recall there may be interference with the dash if you do so.
