I have two d-2's, and on both of them the valve stems leaked. I used teflon thread seal tape, pulled off about a 5ft. piece, doubled it several times, twisted it tightly, making a rope of sorts, opened the valve, backed off the jam nut, moved it away from the threads , and wrapped the teflon rope around the stem about three times, trimmed with a razor blade, and reinstalled the nut.

you can usually find a "string' to pack them with that is sold at hardware stores for faucet stems. It's got graphite impregnated in it. The teflon works too. I usually have some pump packing "rope" around that I can unravel and get a string to wind around one. Just don't get too much under there so you can't get the nut started again.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Of course you can always open them up all the way to seal them off when running the engine. The valve is back seating, that is why you can't take them apart even if you loosen the nut

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
