Hmm, looks suspiciously like that chili you served up a while back...
CR: That pickup tube was packed solid! I used a short section of MIG liner to try and bore part of it clean in a vise, and no go. It worked using a drill bit, and that took effort. The fuel tower and filters didn't look bad compared to some fudge popsicle ones that I have removed from others. Clogged arteries? The supply line was kinked and twisted from the previous persons removing it; I will cheat and use rubber fuel line for now. I do not see the logic behind having a center pickup location, other than helping if you ran a machine on a hillside with low fuel levels. Maybe the engineers were being creative.
JM interesting that the pickup tube had some clogged arteries, but the rest of the system is clean… makes you wonder. Sometimes I like to replace the line that runs between the fuel tank and the engine with a hydraulic line. PTR in Stockton used to have some adapter ls made up to adapt the fittings. I made a few a couple decades ago, I’ll have to find what storage location where I put them now. Many people on here put a modern inline diesel filter in between the tank and transfer pump… while not how it left the factory is a good addition when you are reviving something with unknown or questionable history.
Those aftermarket filters are a real saver, despite not being OEM. I put one on my 5U and the first day I saw a blob floating round in the transparent bowl. This was after I'd attempted to clean the fuel tank. I'll be putting one on all my units henceforth. Besides, it makes the "real" filters last forever
Remember the Caterpillar Fuel Cap? "Buy Clean Fuel - Keep It Clean" Makes one wonder how those machines survived with the barrel pumps, the nozzles left collecting dust and dirt, never draining the condensation from the fuel tanks or bottoms of the "trap wagon" tanks. Let's not forget the 55 gallon drums of lubricants, with the spout cans and funnels exposed to the elements. Amazing how reliable and tough those machines were, especially when lack of regular maintenance in many cases was the rule, hour meter did not work or harvest was in full swing, no time for delays.
On another note of wonderment - Kurt - what was the "cetane" rating on that JM Chili? 🤔🤔 - cts
I should rename this thread “Will it start?”
I had a very peaceful day, so I installed the electric pony goodies sans mag switch.
CTS is very evasive about providing his mailing address.I have the gawd blasted crusty old rope that isn’t staying with “Lynda”. I will have to gift box it for him. JM
