I checked the archives and found out how to double check the flywheel timing. I guessed right. Now on to the pilot bearing, the book says to use oil, would grease be better. I should check the archives on that I guess. After a transmission main shaft seal gets here I should be ready to install engine. thanx

The old J series D2 used transmission oil in the big cup on the top plate, but had a grease fitting on the back edge of the flywheel for greasing the pilot bearing. As far as I know D2's all used a greased straight-roller pilot bearing in the flywheel. What series is your D2?

It is a 1940 3J.

3J and 5J used oil--90W--in the cup on top. Be sure it has a wick in the bottom so it will drain into the throwout bearing during the course of the day. Grease the pilot bearing about as often as you change oil. Roll the engine over until you find the fitting at the top under the plate. Then you will probably need a gun with a hose to get onto the fitting. Give it a couple shots. There's no place to see if it is coming out, and it doesn't take much anyway.

The J series was a pretty good old Cat. I have been running my 5J since about 1969 and think the world of it.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
