Hello,

I have a Caterpillar D2 serial no. 3J6425.

The oil filter arrangement differs from that shown in my parts book & operators handbook.

I understand this is the free flow filter type, which was a common retrofit/upgrade. Can anyone advise the part no. for replacement filter?

I have also been advised to remove the side covers pictured below, remove the oil pickup and clean. Which side cover do I remove? Do both need to come off?

Many thanks.

If that's the 9F6430 full-flow changeover group that became available for tractors 3J4615-up, then the element is 9F6700 with gasket 5B5961, seal 8F9206, and then I think you'll need the "gasket" 5B5937 which is the large o-ring for the top cover. I can't remember which cover gives best access to the pickup but suspect it's the rear cover. For that, you'll need gasket 4B3201. You might just want to make a visual inspection of the pickup - if it's not clogged, then probably easier to leave it alone. However if you do remove it to clean it, then you'll need gasket 4B3523. Note, all this information is from my catalog Form 6700 which is 3J-3J5000, so some of these numbers may have been superseded

Make sure to change the injection pump and governor oil and the starting clutch and pinion oil. Am repairing a governor on 7U that previous owner never did any good maintenance on governor is shot! Roller bearings wore flat and ball bearings about to fall out. Some owners think just run it and thats all ya have to do or yah i'll get to it one of these days maintenance deals.

I've a little more time on the old tractor.

Radiator removed for refurb.

I opened the side covers.

I can see a part no. 4B3524, which I think is the oil pickup assembly?

I can see two fasteners with lock washers. To remove the pickup for clean/ inspection is it these two fasteners that must be removed?

I snapped a couple of photos through the side hatches.
