I was wondering what the best solution would be to replace the oil cooler on my D2.The rad shop said mine was not repairable, they didn't think they could open it up to pinch the failed tubes off.It appears to be leaking right near the bottom,so the other tubes maybe close to going as well. Are there reasonably priced reproductions available? If a used one was found what kind pressure should it stand as a test?

You can bypass it with no issues. Cat got rid of them in later years as not needed.

Thanks guys. I think ill do the bypass for now and hold out for another cooler,i have a line on one if it tests out.It would be nice to keep everything as close to original as possible if I can.
Once again
thankyou

If you use the SEARCH function in the upper right of your screen, you'll find at least a 100 threads on "leaking oil coolers".
Which may convince you to not worry about having a functioning oil cooler.

Nothing wrong with that. I much prefer original if at all possible.

I suppose in some areas...bypassing the oil cooler works...But, there was a reason to have an oil cooler...and, in the hotter climates, it is probably necessary...
Most diesel engines, including automobiles, have oil coolers...That being said, I replaced the oil cooler on my CAT 212 with a new aluminum one manufactured by the Radiator Shop in Oregon...It fit just fine...and works just fine...You can put your hand on the inlet and outlet pipes to the cooler and can feel the difference...
Removing and replacing the old iron oil cooler is not a difficult task...Would I replace the oil cooler on another of my CAT 212's or D2 with a new aluminum one ?...You bet I would... I would not waste my time bypassing the oil cooler...
Take a look at my thread on replacing the oil cooler on my CAT 212 grader...
Respy, CarlsCat...

I didn't like the idea of just removing the bypass valve or jumping the lines together beside the engine so I came up with this. ..1/2" hydraulic tubing & built the manifold blocks. This Cat will never get worked hard enough to need a real oil cooler.

Yeah, I know-should have painted it black...

what do you think the operating maximum temp of the oil should be? Same as the coolant temperature?

it was a factory bulletin stating that the cooler on the tractor wasn't necessary trying to get operating temp up. thats original isn't it? if u want original looks keep and plug lines connected to the empty cooler. AFTER REMOVING BYPASS PISTON. good luck with ur project.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
