The oil cooler on my D2 is leaking, Cat no longer makes the part, and parts stores want an arm and a leg for a rebuilt one. I've taken mine out to have it repaired and it did hold for a while but it's leaking again. From what I've gathered, the cooler is really not needed, so I'm now looking to bypass it.

From the bottom of the oil filter there are two lines (supply and return) that run to the oil cooler. I'm wondering if I could just remove the lines and cap the holes at the bottom of the filter. Would this stop the flow through the filter? If it does, I'll have to create a small loop to connect the supply to the return.

Thanks,

Larry

Yes you can loop the lines and things will work.
If you are like me and do this on the cheep with hose...be carefull .
One end of the hose came off and my feet got a bit oily before I shut it down.
Wife saw the oil line come off and started waving.
My engine is a powerunit so easy to see all around.
I ended up removing the spring and plunger in the oil filter housing.
Then I plugged the fittings with caps.
There are quite a few discussions on this a few pages back.
Lots of info here just look and ask.

I removed the spring and plunger on the bottom of the oil filter on my D4 a couple of weeks ago, and plugged off the oil line holes. Had a tough time finding the plugs, but found a couple of bolts and cut them off. No leaks, and seems to working fine.

I pulled my spring and plunger. I then picked up a couple of brass pipe plugs and pipe taped them and fitted them. I actually milled the square down a bit to the highth of my combination wrench. When painted it looks good and clean. Just my 2cts.
Good luck! :usa2:

Thanks all for the suggestions. I went back and looked at some of the other threads also on the same subject. Once again, ACMOC to the rescue with great information.
