I don,t have a book on one that early but the D311 later engine in a 933 11A loader shows 4 gal.(16 qts.) for the crankcase so yours probably is close to that. You have to check it with the engine running and idling as the dip stick shows the full mark for it idling (running).
Are you sure you have the correct filter? The J series had a bypass oil filtration system with a 2 piece filter. Some of the earlier ones were converted to a full flow system like the later ones.
I'm pretty sure its the one. I got it at Napa. I haven't opened the cannister it goes into but it looks kosher. (I kept the reciept!) Thanks for the heads up though.
If it is the by-pass in it yet then the outer filter inside it is a fine mesh metal screen and the throw away paper filter is inside it.If it has been changed over to the full flow filter then there will just be one big throw away inside the base. Also the by-pass had a tee handle on the outside of the top cover and if it has been changed over it has a hex nut with a groove cut across the hex nut.

You might consider doing a kerosene flush of the engine before just changing the oil...It would help clean out all the sludge that may have built up in the engine...particularly in the bottom of the pan...Do you have any idea as to how long it's been since the engine oil has been changed ?...
The D311 engine oil capacity for my CAT 212 Grader...
is 14 quarts, or 3 3/4 gallons...the same as my D2 3J...
I would have to say it has been probably 5 plus years. From what the guy I bought it from said. I know the guy I bought it from and he's pretty reliable. After unsticking the float I ran the pony last weekend. It runs strong, hard to get started though. I think most of that was me kinda learning the sweet spot on the controls. I wanted to change the oil in the main engine before I start it to prevent any crap and sludge from getting pumped all over the engine. When you flushing this out are you just pouring kerosene or diesel fuel into the filler and draining accordingly? Also I have the cannister with the tee handle so I hope my filter fits?! I'll find out this weekend.
Drain the old oil from the engine...Fill it up with kerosene...
With the engine on start, or decompression, turn the engine over with the pony motor running...turn the engine over for a time to circulate the kerosene through out the engine...so the kerosene will dissolve the sludge...Let the kerosene set in the pan for awhile to allow it to dissolve the sludge in the pan...Then drain the kerosene out...You might remove the inspection panels on the sides of the pan to see how much sludge is in the bottom of the pan...and if the oil pick-up bell is clogged...Have you ran the engine yet ? ...What's the oil pressure look like ? ...Take your time with the machine...Try not to get toooo excited and overlook some maintenance that needs to be done...Good Luck...
Try this.
