Hello Folks

Was running my D2-5U in the weekend and happened to notice that while the main is running there is air being drawn into the pony exhaust.

Somewhere in the dim recesses of my mind I recal that this is a real common "no-no" cause its effectively bypassing the aircleaner - am I right in assuming this ??

If it is a problem how do I fix it ? The seals at each end of the inlet manifold look OK, but replacing them looks like work !!

Thanks

Foster

Those are the symptoms of a leaking heat exchanger tube in the intake manifold. The one that normally pipes heated pony exhaust to preheat main engine intake air. Got a service bulletin on it here somewhere, I'll try to find it and post.

Hello Foster; that was a common problem on farm cats around here. A quick and temporary fix was to plug the pony exhaust pipe with a cork or something that would seal tight, otherwise you'll dust the main.
Good luck,
Bruce

Very interesting article, was this only a problem on U series tractors or did it affect J models as well? next time I get my 4U going I'll check it.

Yep J series D2's and D4 4G, 7J, 2T, 5T had same problem but had different manifold set up.

Mostly applies to the "U" models after the early models that had the cast iron heat exchangers which were pretty much bullet proof but I suppose the cast iron could get ate out too. It's those thin wall heat exchanger tubes with bellows like the 7U5349-up that are more of a problem.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
