I may have located a hydraulic unit for my 1949 D25U, however, I have no idea what to offer for it. The only part I need from it is the main valve. My present system doesn't have a "float" position, and the one I'm looking at does. The shipping for the entire unit is rather high ($300.00) so that has to be factored in to the equation. Does anyone out there have a rough idea what this unit should be worth?

Jack, you need to be more specific about what "hydraulic unit" you have. Is it a Caterpillar #44 or #41? Is it LaPlant or other manufacturer? If the valve is a seperate entity, it sounds like you have a pieced together system without a proper valve. If you can get the Caterpillar pumps, the valve is internal and all you have next to the operators seat is a lever, connected to the front mounted hydraulic unit via a control rod, that operates up when you pull the lever, down (pressure) when you push forward and float when you push all the way forward and lock. Could you post a picture of the system you are interested in?

Caterpillar pumps are very heavy, but I doubt the shipping would be as much as $300 unless you are getting the whole setup (hydraulic lines, splitter valve, etc.). We need more info.

My hydraulic unit is a front mounted one, serial 4W8. I think it is a 41, not a 44. At one time, Cat offered a 7F5200 Float Valve Changeover Group. Finding one of those is impossible, so I opted to try to find a later valve from a unit that had a serial number 4W485 and up. I hope this is a good clarification.

The 4W series is an early 25 gpm single valve #44 pump with float added above s/n # 485-up. Prices can be all over the map with about $1,000 being typical if in good condition. Going to be heavy to ship, unit weighs 365 lbs so at a rough $1/lb your in the ball park.

That's a very common normally 25 gpm single valve that fits many D2 & D4 applications (pump group # 7F3983)

It would have float provision as original.....only the very early models were without.

Thanks, I am hoping to put it on my 5U that has a Holt dozer blade and a pump system that does not have the float provision.

I have had luck dealing with freight brokers. The pump is heavy, for sure. But it does fit nicely on a pallet and if the seller has a way to secure it to the pallet and a way to lift it onto the truck, with the same provisions at your end, it may not be so costly. I have had buyers of parts select R&L Freight. If lifting machinery is not available, they have lift gate trucks that can be dispatched.
