d2 final drive housing

d2 final drive housing

ok today we removed the other track assembly , pivot shaft. both sprockets and seals, but cant get the final drive housing off. are we missing something or is it froze on there? tried using wedges and a hammer but didnt want to break it if we dont have to. tring to get to the steering clutches any ideas?

did it move enough to get the wedges in, the final will move 1/8 to 1/4 and stop if the clutches are stuck. if this is the case try heat on the drum and rock the final from side to side, your odds are about 50/50

If it hasent moved at all you might have missed the bolt in the bottom that taps into the final case

thanks guys, we tried pulling it off all together but didnt go so then we took the sprocket and seal out . there seems to be two different housings on this one for the final and one for the steering clutch. but neither one will come lose we will work on it for awhile and report back thanks for the help.

Every one that I've seen in my limited experience come apart that hard involved the outer driving teeth of the clutch cut into the grooves in the drum so they are sorta hooked together. You might try driving the drum backward/foreward in a rotational manner, see if you can get them unhooked. Try blocking the clutch open to let the plates move individually, but bear in mind you will have to take the clutch pack to a press to be realigned if it comes apart in this manner.

I have limited experience, just did one a month ago. Mine would not move at all, I pounded an old putty knife in the crack and worked it around until I covered all of the mating surfaces. It then moved much easier and was able to work from a putty knife to a screwdriver to a crowbar to a digging bar. I think the gasket was initially holding things together. The clutch discs were rusted away and the splines on the brake drum were notched so the discs would not slide easily.

You need to remove the bolts in the bottom of the drive assembly to transmission case. These are in from the opposite direction. Then you'll keep supporting tension on it while prying via wedges to remove the assembly. I used a small hydraulic jack against the hitch frame to break the gasket seal tension, then used wedges after that to keep from binding in the brake drum.
