Hello markr

You ask the year of manufacture of your D 2 - Serial No 3 J 5627, it was built during the 1941 production year. The other number that you quote is I beleive not a CAT number at all

I don't know where you found the 20P number but it could be a part number or casting code. The engine should have the same serial number tag as found on the rear of the transmission. The engine tag should be on the left rear side of the block just below the cylinder head. The block should also have the serial number stamped on the bottom edge just above the oil pan.👍

Yes, the P51 Mustang had 12 cylinders and was an Allison engine or a Rolls Royce Merlin. 😆😆

the number was tagged on the left side of the engine right where you said. I did not look at the block.

If I was to buy this D2 what value would you place on it. It ran, some dark black smoke, it stalled when pushing a dirt pile. I don't know if the tractor has a govenor or not, but when put under a load the engine didn't stay at the same idle.

Yes, the D3400 is a 4 cylinder in the early D2's. Later, "U series" D2's have the D311 engine with a bigger bore and a tad more horses under the hood.

As far as value, what does it need?? Cat parts aren't cheap (I.E. new Caterpillar D2 radiator cap; $128 at your Cat dealer), and if the tracks & undercarriage are shot that usually costs more to fix than most D2's are worth.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
