Here is one configuration that should work ok although a connection furthur back on the engine (maybe to block drain) might be better.

Yes,OM is correct. The block drain is the preferred location for the lower hose attachment, returning to the position shown in pic for the upper hose. As shown in pic you lose percolation throughout the block which is where the heat is needed. The perc heater must be mounted low enough below the block drain attachment to remain filled with coolant at all times to prevent an airlock and heating element failure. Dave
the place is the best but i never stand my block heaters up i make sure that they are laying down and you can make a nice pad with a guard so if you ge a wild stray stick it will not knock off your block heater as well as not making the lower pipe stick closer to the block so she does not get snagged as well i use frame clamp from napa or i order my stuff from a industrial fastener place so I do not have to run to town I have my shop budget so I can buy things like that wire ends and such you buy a bag of a 100 its a lot cheaper and you can use your pan bolts just need longer ones works great i hop this help you in the mounting of your pump also i use a gear box plug heater helps keep your oil ready to go you do not have to leave it plugged👍 in but i do its nice to get on and go
I got to thinking that if you switched to Direct Start, then you probably also removed your Pony to have a place to put the Batteries? There should be the water connect port on the top back of the block for the Pony which you would have blocked off. What about going in with the outlet of your heater, then finding a low spot at the front to get the cold water from?
