D2 Cooling System Drain

Another question regarding the D2 Cooling System...Can anyone tell me, Are there any other drains on the D2 J Series Cooling System block or does the bottom plus (underneath the radiator) get it all?

Here you go Jim.

Kelly got it right, except that bulliten is for a U series. On the J series the radiator drain is on the left side on the elbow from the radiator to the water pump. I always open the top vent on the pony motor and crack the radiator cap also. And yes, they do drain pretty darned dry.

I've owned and operated a D2 5J since about 1969. I hope you like and appreciate that machine as much as I do mine.

Yes you need to drain the block too along with the radiator to drain the whole system.That block drain normally is a hex plug looking like a bolt head screwed in the left side of the block some where ahead of the starting engine clutch lever.An old R2 book shows a pet cock drain so either type that,s where you drain it and also as was mentioned open the radiator cap and starting engine air release pet cock if so equipped to get the coolant to drain properly and not get blocked.

Except on a 5J it's on the right side above the oil filler pipe. 5U had a bolt-type plug; all the J's Ive seen(not all of them by any means) have had a petcock. It's sort of not obvious, down under the pony crankcase drain pipe. I think it is in the same place on the 5U, come to think of it. Look at Kelly's bulliten.
