I am new to the forum and am looking for some old cat enthusiast opinions. I found a listing for a D2 5U with what appears to be an OEM Caterpillar hydraulic loader. I would love to own a D2 to have around for small work and as a project tractor. The owner states that one steering clutch was seized up 5 or 6 years ago the last time it ran. From the pictures I can see that the air cleaner is missing and the hood has been removed. He is currently asking $1250 which he states is scrap iron value. The sprockets look good but the rails look thin in the pictures. Does anyone have any thoughts on this machine? Is it worth getting into or pass? mbscat. Welcome. 👍

It’s a little hard to tell what you have. The photos don’t show much as to the total condition of the tractor….to me at least. I will say the loader looks like
an old TEALE Dozer-Loader. They were built by a Company of the same name TEALE & COMPANY of Omaha Nebraska years ago.

Here are some additional pictures that I have but I don't think they help much. I thought about buying the hydraulics system off of it and saving it for a different tractor down the road.

Although it is hard to accurately identify, it does appear to be a late model D2 (flat plate fenders, curved steering clutch levers and rounded battery box). It does have a caterpillar 2 spool hydraulic valve and street pads, so it obviously was set up with intentions of being a loader. It would be interesting to see if it has a 5 roller track frame (which I assume it would if intentions of being a loader were the consideration at the time of ordering). The chain looks a little skinny. @ $1250, even if it is junk, the machine is worth more if you were to part it out. It is definately worth saving. Having one with a factory installed after-market loader would put it into the unique D2 category. 👍

There are a few photos of one in the Bob LaVoie D2 photo gallery book.

Sorry to ask but where do I find those pictures. I am still figuring this site out. By the way the tractor does have a 5 roller frame under it and a massive rear counter weight. Originally I was looking for a D2 with a dozer blade but a loader adds so much more functionality.

Does it run?? With any reasonable price I would buy that in a minute!!

It has to be worth at least 2-3k i would think probably even more depending on where it is..

MBS, you can find those books on EBay or Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Caterpillar-D-2-R-2-Photo-Archive/dp/1882256999/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327172435&sr=8-1-fkmr2 You can view a few pages of the Amazon book offering as well, but it unfortunately it doesn't show the loader photo.

It is in Northern Minnesota. Supposedly it ran 5 or 6 years ago with a locked steering clutch. The air cleaner is not installed and the hood was removed for pictures. I have not gotten to look at it in person to see if the engines still turn over. I am looking at buying it to fix up but some of the undercarriage looks pretty tough. He is asking $1250 and is threatening to scrap it if it does not sell.

I can't go from WA to MN for it but if you are close you should be grabbing it with no more questions asked!!!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
