Thanks for the info. Did you guys replace the bearings too?

Fair question. I guess I just don’t always assume that bearings need replacement. I’ve replaced seals on wheel hubs, transmissions, rear ends etc: without having to replace bearings.
But you’re right with these little bearings, and 4k hours, the cost is probably chump change and I should just replace them.
JuiceMan is correct. I rebuilt the water pump on my D2 5U but i did it when i replaced the radiator core. I did change the 2 locking bolts that keeps the fan adjustment in place to grade 8 because they like to break off!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all genuine Caterpillar bolts grade 8?
PW - my philosophy when I refurbished my 5U was that for many of the bearings, the effort to disassemble to get to them justified replacing them, even if they looked ok. The thought of having to open it up a second time really bugged me as it's the sort of thing that I end up doing way more than I'd like : )

I doubt all bolts you will encounter on a Caterpillar are grade 8 or above. Example would be the bolts for the sheet metal, etc. If the bolt head markings have not been worn off, you can determine the grade from those markings. - cts
I have seen more than one D2 and D4 with a broken bolt. My D2 arrived from Oregon that way. The only way to remove the broken stud is by removing the water pump. When i adjust the belts on either tractor, i always use the box end of the wrench.
Howdy folks, I’m looking up the original cat part # for the bearings 1B4115, and not finding a match. Does anyone have a better # or substitute?
Thanks!

Howdy if you’re still out there… How did the pump re-build go? I just ordered new seals & gaskets for my 5U as it’s leaking too.
I did finish the water pump around October, ordered all the parts, bearings, seal and gaskets from Cat. I found that the serviceman’s book from our D4 7U worked to rebuild the pump, and mine was leaking grease and slinging it all over the fan because whoever built the water pump last time had the outer grease seal in backwards.
Fairly self explanatory to assemble, just read the book on how to take it apart so you don’t damage the castings. I also reused my impeller, the ceramic seal had a few minor imperfections so I polished it up with steel wool and gave it a try. I had to run the engine about 10 mins after install to make the seal mate up and it hasn’t leaked a drop since. I also ended up pulling my radiator off too so I could bolt on the crank flange driveshaft for a front hyd unit at the same time.
