There are still a few old D2s in NZ but your next closest source might be Oz. Try the wreckers but also look that part # up on machinerytrader.com. They have international listings. "Worse" case you can always get one from here in the US where there are plenty. You could probably get a whole running pony here as your easiest solution. Mike Meyer on here is familiar with periodic shipments of parts from the US to Oz so you might be able to get on that.
Where in NZ are you?

I'd be amazed if there wasn't a dozen unused pilot motors laying around NZ but you have to find them, a advert in Trade Me or a trucking / tractor magazine would help, and contact Hudson Biggs, he might know of something.

I have 4 or 5 pilot motor crankshafts sitting in Oregon but I don't know their condition, I mean they looked nice to me but I didn't measure them or have I had them crack tested so it is too risky to start shipping one to NZ as a lot of pilot motor cranks are cracked. I was told last year Tilly's in Queensland were asking $A900 ($US650) for a good crank which is crazy when you can buy the whole tractor for about double that!

Keep asking on here Kiwicat and get a advert into the next ACMOC magazine as a priority, the magazine is seen and read by all 2,900 ACMOC members, this Bulletin Board is seen by only a few hundred.
Good luck
Mike

Keep an eye on ebay, you just missed one about a week ago, went for $300...
I have one, but it was already ground .030, & one rod was screwed up again, so no go...I bought a whole engine for $600, needed the crank, a rod, piston, & the block anyway. Had to have that crank ground, as it had been built up & the buildup was flaking off of the mains.
Cranks ain't exactly growing on trees, even here.

Good luck finding a crankshaft. They are out there. Most of the cranks fail for the same reasons. It's not usually the rods but the mains that fail due to the locating pins failing and other lubrication issues. If you are past .030 inch under, you can have bearings made to fit. I am fortunate enough to have the resources to build my own. Check out the fun at this post .

Hey Rich,
Thanks for linking to your thread, I couldn't find it with this infamous search function the other day when I posted about bearings...
I also made a set of main bearings for the D2 pony.

Rax200,
Good idea, but I imagine developing & building new crankshafts would be prohibitive cost-wise. It's sad, but the crank may be the Unobtanium part that seals the fate of the pony motors...
I know some of them were built back up to standard back in the day, but at least in the one I bought, that didn't work that great...the buildup metal was coming off in flakes & really raising heck with the bearing as well as the seal.
Maybe the flame-spray process has improved since then-might be an option to save some cranks, I don't know...there's other issues that crop up too, the flywheel taper & keyway on the one I have was showing signs of problems too. And as somebody said above, always the possibility of a crack.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
