i cant answer your question, but on a D2 I own, the previous owner just looped a hose from the cooler out put on the filter base to the cooler return on the base. Kind of like bypassing you heater core when it leaks

This is an annual subject, the last time about a year ago most of the answers were provided with previous links back to posts/threads with diagrams and photo's of where that check valve is.
IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY AND IT IS EARLY IN THE MORNING FOR ME to say this, BUT it is under a plug going up the center of the oil filter housing more or less inline with those two ports.
OM will probably chime in soon and correct me but I also seem to remember he had the Part Number for the proper Caps to go in those hole as they are not standard Pipe thread.

Use hydraulic fitting "O-ring Face Seal" plugs size dash10 (1"-14tpi) straight thread.
Remove face seal o-ring.
I also stretched a #116 Viton o-ring over the plug but I'm not sure that is necessary. I used Teflon paste pipe thread sealer.
Plugs are only a couple of $ each.
Plug the oil cooler too for a clean installation.
Remove oil cooler by-pass valve and spring.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
