I'm trying to adjust the main clutch on my early D2-5U. Following the service manual and pulled out the button but I'm unable to get it to turn to tighten up the clutch. Any suggestions?

Spray with WD40 and tap it around with a long drift and a hammer.

Does the mechanism look rusty?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

no rust but it did sit for 20 years out in the elements.
I'll try tapping it, probably just gummed up.

Put the transmission in gear then try turning it.

I had the transmission in gear, just couldn't get the spider to turn.

Ok, keep putting rocking it back and forth, try a pry bar too. Make sure pin is all the way out.

Second that - if the pin is a bit rusty, it can sometimes not come all the way out - you can use a feeler gauge to confirm it's clear of the pressure plate. If it's not clear, don't whale on it. Spray it with some stuff, then turn it with your fingers and loosen it up. Once it comes all the way clear, then you can fashion a fork to put behind the knob to hold it open while you adjust

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
