Any body have any luck finding mains and rods for the big motor ? Cat just laughed at me! what does any body think of using the crank and bearings out of a motor I have with a cracked block in my good block?? I got about thirty thou clearance in the bearings in my tractor now but it ran and had good oil pressure! Is this acceptable to run ? I know cats spec for most clearance is 0.015 but don't have a lot of options. The tractor is for show and probably will only run about 5 days a year. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated, thanks Scotty:confused2:

Cat seems to only have std. For anything undersize, go to Florin or Smith or anyone on machinerytrader.com. I got all of mine from Florin. All were available in 030 except for the front main, so I had that built back up to std and bought that one from Cat.

I haven't reviewed the specs but I recall .030 is about as far as is recommended. I think you can run it.

The rear main might be the problem for a show tractor if it starts pouring oil into the clutch. If its showing no signs of that yet, it might be fine. I do know that once it starts knocking its most likely too late to just replace the bearings, so you take that chance.

Question--if a crankshaft journal--rod or main--varies say from .02 to .03 clearance, can you just install a bearing without turning the crank? would you install a .02 or a .03 bearing?
thanks

Did mine a about 6 / 7 years ago. Had to go same route that Neil suggested, except it was the center main that was std all others were 20 under i think. Had to have crank built up and reground

You would install a 0.015 undersize bearing if such were available. That would leave you with 0.005 minimum clearance and 0.015 maximum. A 0.020 undersize bearing (bearing is actually 0.010 thicker than standard) would result in an area of zero clearance.

Ideally you would have crank reground to bring out of round condition back to zero.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
