I recently acquired a 1948 D2 5U #1011 it has a Cat 2S blade with a #44 hydro unit #4W-45 up front. The lever gives me up, neutral, a very small spot where it will float, then power down. I am wondering if this float position is just a fluke or a result of something wore in the valve? I have slammed it hard forward as much as I dare and cannot get it to float, is there any way to get it to float in the far forward position like it should? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi Kaeson, I don't think it has a float although I haven't used my unit for a while and it's a 9W #44. I could be wrong : )

Do you guys know if they made the 44 with and without float? And is there any way to tell if a units got it without having the machine running… I’ve got another 5U that I have not got running yet but it’s got a 44 on it too so just wondering about that one without having to go through the hassle of switching them out to find out

Units 4W1 to 4W484 did not have float unless the field installation conversion valve was installed.

Thank you guys very much for the info … guess I’m out of luck I’ve got 4W-45 and 4W-477. I’m sure there’s no chance in finding the conversion parts either?

It might be easier to just swap in a later model #44. If you can find one that matches your pipework and controls, then it would be a direct swap

I believe you are correct Neil, would like to get this one set up like that and swap the hyster winch off my other one onto this one too. Then just have the other one as a drawbar rig.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
