I have two D2 5U's. The early one, 5U1949 is a crawler with a PTO. Bottom is very good, but no blade and tired engine. The second is a 5U15739 that seems to have a very powerful engine but rough chassis. Although I would like to keep my early crawler original, we need a machine to do dozer work with. If I understand correctly my crawler is pre design change and my later dozer is after design changes. How would these changes effect the interchangeability of the D311 engine and dozer parts in my situation? Sorry if this has already been covered, I tried to search first.

Thanks very much,
Peter.

One of the biggest differences in your tractors is the later one is approximately 6'' longer to allow for changing the flywheel clutch without removing the engine. The extra length shows in the longer track frames, sloped top bell housing, and hood.
As far as the actual D311 engine goes, I believe the engine from your later tractor will bolt right up to the earlier bell housing with no issues or modifications.

If I'm mistaken, someone please jump in and say so... Thanks, Wayne

what i found in my parts books is that the engine block assembly had different part numbers--4F4165 for the earlier machine and 3H9070 for the later machine.

The later engine should bolt right up, the 4F4165, and 3H9070 blocks show as being the same. Mounting a cat dozer from a later D2 to an older one will cause some issues, the mounting brackets from the later one will move the blade an extra six inches further out in front, making an all ready hard to control dozer much worse, and if you were to try to put a dozer from an older model to the later one, it would not fit. The blade itself, and the C frame, if it is an angle dozer are the same size wise, old to new, it is just the mounting brackets that are different, the steel hydraulic lines that go across the dash may also be different enough to not fit.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
