I am a new member and have recently purchased a D2 5U project. I have been using information found here to help me with this restoration project, very helpful.

I am interested in trying to reline my D2 brake bands myself. I see that McMaster Carr sells several types of brake lining sheets. Has anyone done this? any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

P. Gill

Hopefully the lining and rivets are still available from Cat. It has been several years since I have ordered any but the last I purchased for the same vintage D6 came drilled just rivet it down. I have also purchased from some after market suppliers that are listed at the top of discussion page.

I'd recommend you stay away from the aftermarket brake linings. I've had feedback that some of them are pretty bad with very little service life. It's also not worth messing with home made versions. Take the bands to any good commercial clutch/brake relining shop and have them redone there. Good rebuilds use a combination of rivets and bonding with modern adhesives.

Thanks for the help. I'll check around to see if I can get this done locally. I tend to be frugal and design and build where I can. Looks like new brakes are ~$130 each. If I do decide to do this on my own I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks all...

I might have a good set of brake bands? Let me know if you are interested and I'll look.

I don't imagine there's any way to get the bands off without tearing the whole back end apart...

That's right. Pull the seat/fuel tank, pull the tracks, then pull the finals. I just replaced a steering clutch throw-out bearing on mine and it took about 10 hours to pull it down for the first time. I would certainly try all the adjustment first before starting.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
